Sandwich
Sandwich was one of the Cinque Ports and still has many original medieval buildings
About Sandwich
Lying on the River Stour, while once a major port, it is now 2 miles (3 km) from the sea due to the disappearance of the Wantsum Channel.
The town has an annual festival period towards the end of August.
Landmarks include:
- The 14th-century St Thomas' Hospital
- The Fisher Gate on the quay dates from 1384, and has been scheduled as an Ancient Monument
- Monk's Wall nature reserve and a bird observatory at Sandwich Bay
- The Barbican, in the town square, built in 1579
- White Mill, built in 1760 and worked by wind until 1929
- Sandwich Guildhall Museum houses original copies of the Magna Carta and the Charter of the Forest from 1300
- A fingerpost three miles from Sandwich in the hamlet of West Street points towards both Ham and Sandwich, thus reading "Ham Sandwich"
